Orange (Porcellio Laevis)
Orange Porcellio laevis is a bold and highly active terrestrial isopod species, well known for its bright orange coloration and rapid colony growth. This variety is especially popular among hobbyists and collectors due to its striking appearance, hardy nature, and fast establishment in captivity.
These isopods thrive in a simple, stable setup with a clear moisture gradient, allowing them to move between damp and drier areas as needed. Ideal temperatures range from 20–28°C, with moderate humidity and good ventilation to prevent excess moisture buildup. They are highly adaptable and forgiving, making them one of the easier species to maintain.
A substrate mix of soil, coconut fibre, and plenty of leaf litter is ideal, providing both food and shelter. Cork bark, hides, and layered organic matter should be included to encourage natural behaviours such as grazing, burrowing, and clustering. They benefit from constant access to decaying plant material, along with regular calcium and protein supplementation to support fast growth and successful moulting.
Exceptionally prolific and beginner-friendly, Porcellio laevis is perfect for both new and experienced keepers. Colonies expand quickly under good conditions, making them a rewarding and visually striking addition to any isopod collection.
